Los Angeles, officially the “City of Los Angeles,” known by the initials L. A, is a large city in Southern California. It is 551 km from San Francisco and is the second largest city in the United States after New York City with a population of 3,792,621, [14] making it the most populous city in California. It is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, celebrity culture, traffic, and the film and television industry. It is located in a large coastal basin surrounded by mountains on three sides that reach an altitude of (and over) 3,000 m.

Although historically home to various tribes such as the Chumash and Tongva, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo appropriated it to Spain in 1542 as did the rest of the area now called Alta California. The city was officially founded by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve on September 4, 1781. It became part of the First Spanish Empire (present-day Mexico) in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. After the end of the Mexican-American War of 1848, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased under a Guadalupe Hidalgo agreement that made the purchased seats part of the United States. The city became a municipality on April 4, 1850 - five months before California became a federal state.

The center is the much larger metropolitan area of Los Angeles (13 million people) [15] and the area of Greater Los Angeles (18 million people). This makes it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, and the second largest in the United States. The city is the center of the eponymous, most populous district in the United States. The inhabitants of the city were originally called "Angelenos".

It is a global city with strong businesses, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research. It is also known as the "City of Angels". The city is 6th on the global index of the best cities and 9th on the index of global economic forces. It is home to renowned institutions that cover a wide range of professional and cultural fields, and is one of the most sustainable economic forces in the United States. According to 2008 data, the Los Angeles Combined Statistical Area (or CSA for short) has a gross metropolitan product (BMP or GMP) of $ 831 billion. This statistic makes it the third largest gross product after the area of Greater Tokyo and the New York metropolitan area. As Hollywood is part of Los Angeles, this neighborhood makes it a leader in the production of television programs, movies, video games and music. The city also hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games
