Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada, western United States, on the California-Nevada border.

The lake is famous for its very clean and transparent water, as well as for the panorama of mountains in all directions. The region where it is located is simply called Tahoe and is known as a center for skiing, summer sports, and even casinos. It obtains its water from a total of 63 tributaries, which drain a basin similar in size to the lake itself. The lake empties through the Truckee River, which flows north, through Reno and empties into Pyramid Lake. Its maximum extension is 35 km long and 19 km wide, its surface is 495 km². Its average depth is 301 m and maximum of 501 m. It has a volume of water of 151 km³. It has a coastline of 114 km and is located at a height of 1,899 m.

The major cities around it are South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Tahoe City in California and Carson City, Reno and Stateline in Nevada.

Lake Tahoe appears in the movie The Godfather II, X-Men 2 and 3, and in the Bonanza series.

The original clarity of the lake water with an average depth of 30 meters has decreased to 19 meters in 2019. The reason for this lies in the increasing growth of algae and other invasive plants.

A pilot project on the south coast of the lake, supported by the University of Nevada, Reno for three years, evaluated a successful way to control the water weeds in August 2020. Using ultraviolet C light treatment, the DNA and the cell structure of these aquatic plants could be permanently damaged. The light body mounted under a ship for this purpose had dimensions of 3.6 × 9.7 meters (12 feet × 32 feet). A larger type is planned for the following year. The ultimate goal is to connect several of these luminaries together so that an area of one morning can be treated per day.

According to the project evaluation, the approach to combating aquatic weeds with ultraviolet light is also a promising instrument for other bodies of water.
